Happy taste buds, empty wallet

Ever since I sampled their delicious food at a downtown event several years ago, Eclipse Spanish Tapas and Bar has been at the top of my “must try” list.

The concept of tapas, small dishes that everyone shares, reminds me of one of my favorite Cantonese Chinese traditions, Dim Sum.

Adventureous friend in tow, I finally checked it out last night. The ambiance and decor were delightful. We were seated quickly. I drooled over the menu. But *gulped* at the prices.

We decided to try three different dishes…

001

Paella de Carne (Rice with saffron, vegetables, chicken, and Spanish chorizo)

002

Escalivada (Mediterranean roasted vegetables with queso fresco and romesco)

005

Gambas Eclipse (Lightly breaded shrimp sauted in a spicy cream sauce)

The Paella wasn’t anything special (my exact words: “Well…it’s rice.”), the vegetables were ok, and the shrimp was delectable. However, with the recommended 2-3 tapas per person at $11-$17 per dish, we could have easily spent $30-$50 per person, not including wine, the foundation of the traditional tapas experience.

Instead, my friend and I ordered 3 dishes to share, drank water, spent $25 each, and went home hungry. Yikes. Not a happy camper.

Lesson: If the prices aren’t listed on the website, it might be a good idea to call ahead.

This was my experience, too! Although, I might want to go back one day just for that shrimp!

It WAS delicious!! Although the BangBang shrimp at Bonefish Grill is quite comparable and you get double the amount! (Plus Bang Bang is only $5 on Wednesday nights…if you haven’t had it before, give it a try!)
